(criminal) A monopoly on facts

http://weblog.infoworld.com/foster/2004/10/30.html

"Sometimes it seems like Microsoft has a monopoly of just about everything, but it shouldn't have one on the facts."

So... got a monopoly? here's how to keep it:

  1. Pay for studies by "independant" analysts that show your software is better than the free one
  2. Launch a "get the facts" campaign
  3. Prevent the other guys from doing the same by having a clause in the license for your software that explicitly says "no publishing of benchmark results without prior approval"

Cool, huh?

"Microsoft can and should publish any information it thinks will sway customers to their side. What it shouldn't do is to try to deny anyone else the right to do the same thing. Sometimes it seems like Microsoft has a monopoly of just about everything, but it shouldn't have one on the facts."
